There's quite a lot of candidates for this one and a lot as funny as Harry Hill, but the one show that really made me laugh the loudest was
Seinfeld (even if it was a Yank show which I normally find as funny as Harry Hill.)

Got to admit the League of Gentlemen was excellent and Cheers in its time was hilarious.
Monty Python did a lot to influence present comedy and Life of Brian is said to be the funniest film ever made.

I'm PMSL now thinking about the scenes where Delboy fell through the bar, where grandad unscrewed the wrong chandeliere and when 'Batman & Robin' came running through the mist... f'kin hilarious...the wife thinks I've flipped.

For those who haven't seen the funniest moment ever in TV comedy (the Batman and Robin scene) you've got to see it....
Rodders and Delboy are late for a fancy dress party, dressed as Batman and Robin, a man is mugging a woman down an alley, to take a shortcut Delboy and Rodders run down the alley (to set the scene its foggy) the mugger notices Batman and Robin coming out of the mist running towards him and shits himself - need i say more......PMSL.....:D :D :D

A woman is an occasional pleasure but a cigar is always a smoke.

Humor is reason gone mad.
I didn't like the play, but then I saw it under adverse conditions - the curtain was up.
I have a mind to join a club and beat you over the head with it.
I must confess, I was born at a very early age.
I must say I find television very educational. The minute somebody turns it on, I go to the library and read a good book.
I never forget a face, but in your case I'll be glad to make an exception.
I read in the newspapers they are going to have 30 minutes of intellectual stuff on television every Monday from 7:30 to 8. to educate America. They couldn't educate America if they started at 6:30.

She got her looks from her father. He's a plastic surgeon.
The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you've got it made.
There's one way to find out if a man is honest - ask him. If he says, "Yes," you know he is a crook.

Fools and Horses & Blackadder are the Daddies that raised the bar for every single Britcom to adhere to. They are almost untouchable in their consistency and classic status. Fools and Horses should have ended when they made their money when they sold the watch. I believe Blackadder could still be made today and be as funny. From recent times, The League of Gentlemen is the pretender to their throne down to the sheer quality of it, it's originality and the flawless performances of the cast.
Frasier is the Yank Comedy that set the standards across the Pond and stands head and shoulders above their best of the rest such as Friends etc.
Best of the rest.
Father Ted
Steptoe & Son
One Foot in The Grave
Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads
Dads Army
Red Dwarf (Series 3-6, the rest is shit)
I'm Alan Partridge
Fawlty Towers
Porridge
The Young Ones
Hi-De-He
Ever Decreasing Circles
Just Good Friends
Drop the Dead Donkey
The New Statesman
Rising Damp
Only When I laugh
Nightingales
The Thin Blue Line
The Brittas Empire
Edit: How the Feck could I forget The Office??!!

Saw an interview with Ricky Gervais once where he said all the characters in Seinfeld were the kind of people who needed putting down, that's what made it so good. I've seen that Larry David show and even though he co-wrote Seinfeld I wasn't too impressed. It reminded me of watching recent material from John Cleese. I can imagine it went down well in the US though.
The problem with Seinfeld is that it has spawned a whole new generation of sitcoms which try to copy it, but fail miserably.

Having read all the posts I can't remember if anyone has mentioned it already or not but you can't beat Porridge. You can't beat a show that has someone digging up the pitch at Bellend Rd.
Of the more recent stuff, Seinfeld and Scrubs were/are both good.
Also, I have to say that watching a good comedy series is very much like making love to a beautiful woman. As you can gather, I like Swiss Toni as well, just a shame it's on so late on BBC3.

Have to agree with Seinfeld, it is probably my favourite comedy, the things that happen to george and the way he re-acts are priceless, I think the funniest though is The Office. I can't do with Seinfeld. Pretentious, poorly acted rubbish that barely raises a smile. However, I'm halfway through the first series box set of Curb Your Enthusiasm, which is basically a sitcom based around the life of Larry David, the fella who created Sienfeld and despite my reservations, I think it's brilliant! This for me mirrors the character of Frasier in Cheers, I thought he was poor and was a big part of the shows decline but when I got round to watching Frasier it ended up and still is one of my favourite tv shows ever.
