I missed this last week but just read about the death of Arthur Lee from Leukeamia, leader of the 60's LA psychedelic group LOVE. IMO after the loss of Syd Barrett the other week we've lost another musical genius. Although he was a complicated figure & hard to figure out at times his legacy is large. He led a properly racially integrated band when it was the height of unfashionability in the US in the 60's. Recommended listening is the classic Forever Changes album which featurs the classic Alone Again Or later covered by the Damned.
RIP Arthur

Did'nt Love has the residency slot at The Whiskey in LA before The Doors.

Thats right they were the first rock band on Elektra records but Arthurs stubbornness to toe the line saw the Doors overtake them. They were the hottest band on the strip after the Byrds

So its got nothing to do with The Doors having much more musical talent then?....Nothing to do with Jim Morrisons potential marketing value for Jac Holtzman the head of Electra records?

True, Morrisons marketing value was through the roof compared to Love but Jims big ambition when he started was to be as big as LOVE, thats how good they were regarded by everyone

The Doors never did Big Love...that was Fleetwood Mac.
As a side note Sharron and I had a discussion the other day about whether or not Pete Doherty was a poors mans Jim Morrison.
I said he was and as usual won the argument. In 30 years after Dohertys death(which surely must come soon) I said him and his music will be long forgotton. Unlike Morrisons of course which has and will continue to live on.
Docherty is an arsehole not even worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as Jimbo but as usual she would not have it:rolleyes:
I have never heard owt by Love TBH so Iam gonna look them up on Napster and dig me Kaften out and light up a big onetup:

I thought I better start with the Forever Changes live album from 2003. Recorded at The Festival Hall before an enthusiastic audience this concert recreates Loves classic critically acclaimed 1967 album practically note for note.
As I've said I have never heard anything by Love but I really really like it. I have always been into this era,but sadly been born a little too late i just caught onto the end of it in my younger days.
The runaway track is of course the biggest hit from the album Alone Again Or. I particularly like the Mexican sounding horn effect. It makes one think of squat white shacks, men in all white clothes and Peyote.
There is a couple of notes Lee fails to reach on The Daily Planet, but I believe they were originally sung by Bryan McClean on the album version.
To me, this is one of the greatest albums ever made(studio version), at least in the Rock idiom. The song construction is unique, very linear, and often abandoning the verse-chorus-verse-chorus construction common to western music. The arrangements, instrumentation and performances stretch the limits of the musicians. For instance, at the end of "You Set The Scene", the trumpet arpeggio is almost impossible for the trumpeter, but he/ she almost makes it. This being behind the note and stretching the ability of the performer makes the greatest music, from Elvis to the Beatles to the Velvet Underground to the Clash to Nirvana and Tupac, all took themselves to the limit in their music. To me, this album speaks to that aesthetic more than any other.
Lyrically, there is the most amazing combination of the times of the 1960's ("the news today will be the movies of tomorrow") the topical ("they're locking us up today, they're throwing away the key. I wonder who it will be tomorrow, you or me") and the timeless (most of the album). The lyrics of "You Set The Scene" fill everything, verses and combinations of lines speak to everything that can happen to someone in a lifetime. Wholeheartedly recommended. Sit back and enjoy this one.tup: tup: tup: tup: tup:
I did'nt write this though...John Densmore did!!

Pete Dohertys music will still be remembered in 30 years... His days in The Libertines alone will ensure that...
The comparason with Jim Morrison is laughable to start with the only connecting factor being the drugs....
Musically they are poles apart.....
Doherty as mashed as he normally is produces some quality tunes past and present..The reason most hate the guy is because of the media frenzy around his drug taking..
If the media was as big and powerful in the 60's and 70's old gits like you would have slated The Doors, Jimi every rock band etc etc....
BTW just because you say he is shit doesn't make him shit.....
Stick to the spud pictures sandwich seller...

I think Docherty if he is remembered by anyone, will be remembered only for his drug taking antics. I think he actually courts publicity by his antics. As far as the Doors are concerned, i bet everyone would know 'Light My Fire' but hardly anyone could name a Babyshambles or Libertines track now or in 30 years time

Did everyone know the Doors at the time????
The point is he will be remembered for the Libertines at the moment...They were a great band...If they reformed in the future they would be massive ... But only to those who like that music...The Libertines were the leaders in that Genre of music whilst they were together..
Most people 35+ still rate The Beatles as the greatest band..Doesn't mean they were..Just that the Boyzone of their time hit the market at the right time....
Great music disappears all the time...Doesn't make it any less great...Just the "masses" remember the chart hits.....Some of the greatest songs and bands are now only remembered on TOTP2 or other such programmes...

You really do talk out of your'e trumper.....its not just urban legend its fooking true. Just because your jerky little GI mates in the Army listen and look up to you dont make you the total authority on all things that you clearly think you are.
I've enjoyed our little spats in the past but now they are at an end as I cannot even cyber joust with a Penis like yourself.
Your comments above prove that you have no knowledge of life outside the camp gates Tony.
Peel the spuds well Mr D as its the only hope you have left....goodnight and goodbye.
The Libertines indeed:rolleyes:

The Libertines were a class act, great band live aswell, in fact i was listening to em this very day in my car....tup:
But to say Docherty will be remembered in 30 years is piss funny - the guys a first class absolute prick, nowt to do with his drug taking antics, that don't bother me in the slightest, its the fact he thinks his fookin joke of a band - the Babyshambles are actually good - they're the biggest load of shite there's been around for yonks....
He'll be remembered (just) in a few years the same way as the Boo fookin Radleys were or sommat!!....
BTW The Libertines have about as much chance of reforming as the Beatles do - and they're lacking 2 members.....;)

The Libertines made one good album but anyone who compares them with the Doors or the Beatles for that manner is a few tools short of a box IMOtdwn:
Pete Docherty cant die quick enough for me, just like every other snort beast on the planettup: ...to compare him with legends like Jim Morrison or any other entertainer who have lasted the test of time is also folly!
