The Garden of Rama - Arthur C Clarke

The 3rd book in the Rama series. Most people have only heard of 2001 by Clarke, but he's written a lot of other decent sci-fi and this is probably his next most famous series.

A History of Britain Part 1 - Simon Schama

The books that accompany the BBC TV series. Part 1 covers 3000 BC to 1603 AD. I think it's important to have an understanding of the world you live in, and how it came to be what it is. I'm big on history books generally.

As for Mein Kampf, even at the height of 30's Nazism when millions of people owned the book, very few of them actually read it, which I guess is a shame, because if you do read it, then you will discover that Hitler did everything he promised to do when he came to power. I have also heard that it is very popular in Turkey these days, amongst young people.

One of those classic books which really blew my mind was Henry Fielding's Tom Jones. That is apparantly where the singer took his name from. When the book came out there was a small earthquake in London and they blamed it on that book. I think there is more bonking in that book that even the adult shoutbox would have problems competing with it. The plot is hilarious.

I'm currently reading "The Last Human" by Doug Naylor. It's the last of the Red Dwarf novels.
I had always been a bit wary of these books having been such a big fan of the tv series but I eventually picked up the first one and jumped in and I've not stopped reading them. This is the last of the novels and I have to say that having read all the others they are actually BETTER than the tv show.
Highly recomended to all RD fans.

I'm reading Lawrence the uncrowned King of Arabia. I just finished the Seven Pillars of Wisdom by Lawrence. Helps one to understand the arab mentality. You certainly don't get the descendents of the former slaves in Arabia complaining about being used and abused and lack or rights. I'd guess they'd haven their heads cut off if they did.

Review:

The basic premise is that a guy can travel through time to anytime in his own lifetime. He meets his future and past self and also he knows his future wife from when she is six years old! The book is mainly the story of their developing relationship so a love story I suppose. I'm not really into love story novels but this one was quirky enough to be highly entertaining. Sad, amusing and lovely at times.
I've always been fascinated by the idea of time travel so that's why the book initially appealed. Highly reccomended reading!
I'm a believer in sharing books, no point them gathering dust on the shelves! I usually pass on books to friends or the charity shop. However, if anybody wants this copy, pm me your address and I'll send it free of charge because I'm nice like that!

The Fox and the Flag-----and The Fox and The Fortune, two books in one by Dan Parkinson. Well written adventure on the high seas in sailing ships during the Anglo/American wars in the late 1700's. Could hardly put the damn thing down. Cheers.

Not in work this week so read this one pretty quick. It's quite an old book, early 1990's but still relevant! The premise is that the UK is brainwashed by a subliminal message the night before the election in 1992. Instead of the tories, a democratic party win and immediately boot the royals out of their splendour and dump them on a council estate in the midlands. Nobody has any money, jobs, manors or morals. The royals learn to adapt! Their characters are like the spitting image personas of them!
Sue Townsends anarchic humour and take on working class British culture is spot on and funny at the same time. Not quite as good as the Adrian Mole series but a good read all the same!
