Anyone watch this the other night?
It was an hour long expose of the world of body building and steroid abuse. The main guy featured, Gregg Valentino (pictured), has the biggest arms in the world, which he freely admits he gained from steroid usage. His arm became infected because of re-using needles to inject steroids and he had to have surgery on one of his arms.
I was interested because I used to be reasonably interested in weight training and bodybuilding about 15 years ago. For 3 years I was in the gym 4 times a week and on a fairly strict diet. I wasn't massive (about 14 stone at 6 foot and very little fat), but you could tell that I trained. I've been to a few bodybuilding shows (watching not competing) and I'm still reasonably interested in the sport.
I never did steroids, but I did do quite a lot of protein powders and supplements. I did a bit of creatin which isn't a steroid but has a similar effect, albeit not as pronounced.
As regards to steroids, I can't get too worked up about people using them. These are adults making a conscious decision, and I believe that as an adult you should be able to put whatever you want in to your own body.
Anybody else watch the programme or interested in bodybuilding?

I watched it and Iam glad that folk like those dont train at my gym. I've been training for nearly three years and go 6 days a week, but I'd never get into the realms of heavy stuff like them.
I do weights but mostly cardio stuff and over the last 33 months have definitely seen a change in my body. Its much more toned and a lot less flab which delights me.
Never used even any supplements...just a good old Veggie diet and 6 hours sleep a night does me fine.
All those guys in the prog have ended up with health problems. One of them had gonads the size of peanuts.   To me that kind of defeats the whole object but I of course can see why they do it.
Vegetarianism......you know it makes sense.tup:

Actually the other half was watching it and I nipped in for a look, however, it was gross - I couldnt bear it, especially when it started showing what he did !
A surprise to many mayb but I too used to go to watch some of the shows when they were in Bradford, mainly because the other half has always been into bodybuilding.
The one thing I couldn't watch though were the women !! uuuggggghhhh no way !

I watched it and thought it was an eyeopener in terms of steroid abuse. However it is abuse and the vast majority of steroid users don't over do it.
I'm starting my training programme now that I've probably stopped growing and I've been offered Steroids. It's not that I think they're bad but i'd just like to get my body ripped the honest way and not the easy way. Plus, training properly prevents any chance of steroid abuse because it lasts much longer than steroids

Eat BIG, Train BIG, lots of complex carbs and obviously protein, plenty of sleep and you soon bulk up. I put half a stone on in a matter of weeks. Although you do gain the most in the first weeks, a naturally grown body looks far better than a steroid induced one IMO

I've got back in to the training since I retired. I've been at the gym 6 times a week for the last 3 months or so, and on a low fat diet eating 6 times a day supplemented with protein powders. Just at the minute I'm concentrating on losing the gut more than building the muscle - I've lost nearly a stone and 4 inches off my waist.
I'm going to carry on cutting for another couple of months and then start to look at bulking up.

6 times a week? How do you let your muscles recover and repair if you go 6 times a week?

It's a split cycle over a fortnight with alternate days doing cardio. Each body part gets 3 days rest between training:
Mon: Upper Body
Tue: Cardio
Wed: Lower Body
Thu: Cardio
Fri: Upper Body
Sat: Cardio
Sun: Rest
Mon: Lower Body
Tue: Cardio
Wed: Upper Body
Thu: Cardio
Fri: Lower Body
Sat: Cardio
Sun: Rest
Cardio is either treadmill, bike or rower.
The programme I'm following is sold as a book - Bill Phillips 'Body for Life'.
