First Shearer of recent, now another one of the "hardmen" of football retires.
It seems these types of players are becoming few and far between. I can name but only a few of these, (E.g Ashton, Rooney, etc)
What type of new breed of footballer is being evolved nowadays?

How wasn't Shearer a hardman?.....
Just cos he weren't a gobshite like Keane and others don't mean he wasn't hard - i guarantee one on one - no camera's, no press that no fooker who i know would mess with him.....Shearer was a pro who didn't react, and who didn't give it the big man - but in all seriousness i've not seen one player who's played in the premier league since its inception that could match him for his bottle, strength and toughness!!
I've mentioned it many times but the "argument" he had with Keane summed Shearer up - Keane was being held back whilst swinging for Shearer - his fist missed connecting by millimeteres from Shearers face - yet he never even blinked, he just stared him out with a look like - try it outside yer Oirish ***** That day IMO he showed Keane up for what he was - an ill-disciplined, overrated pikey, he made him look a reet twat - a fact that Keane admitted to in his book!!

Footy Hardmen..
1 - Roy Keane, Manchester United
2 - Ron 'Copper' Harris, Chelsea
3 - Vinnie Jones, Wimbledon
4 - Dave Mackay, Spurs
5 - Nobby Stilles, Manchester United
6 - Dennis Wise, Chelsea
7 - Tommy Smith, Liverpool
8 - Razor Ruddock, Liverpool
9 - Kelvin Muscat, Wolves
10 - Norman Hunter, Leeds
Shearers name just wouldnt appear in that list, your mistaking having bottle and not backing down or being strong as being 'hard'. You could list a 100 players like Shearer - good pro's with bottle, their not 'hardmen' though.

The only assosiation you can make between Lee Crooks and Roy Keane is that Crooks looks like the chunky vocalist of Guitarless band 'Keane'

Ron COPPER Harris....PMSL.....:D Was he mates with CHOPPER Harris?....tup:
Ruddock was a hard man - no doubt, but he was just a thug, Julian Dicks was another West Ham "tough un" but at least he could laik a bit!!
Wise was another gobshite who's arse would drop out in real life away from "protection" - as would Bowyers IMO....
Steve Lomas was a tough tackler who i bet could handle himsen!!

So coming back to play from 2 injurys that would have left most crippled - never mind being able to play again, throwing himself back into challenges - and finishing up top scorer.....and he aint hard?....
Most of the players you mentioned were hard in front of a crowd - and the camera's.....i bet none on that list would mess with Shearer in the carpark!!...

I don't know anyone who's come back from two cruciates.....the worst possible injury you can have as a player - and he has done twice!!
The rest of my comment is valid though - not one on your list would mix it with Shearer off the pitch....i think your confusing "show-offs" and dirty bastards for hard men mate.....;)
BTW Jacky Charlton would have every single one of the players on your list for Brekkie mate.....;)

I am trying to work out which comment on here is the biggest pile of gobshite of the lot
Alan Shearer wasn't Hard
or
Roy Keane was overated.
Theres a lot of bollocks to pick from daily on here, but for anyone to say either of the above without toungue firmly planted in cheek is fooking loopy.
Both those players would have graced any World class team and both are planted firmly in the top ten Premiership Era list of the greatest that have played there.
They would both also be firmly planted in the Top Ten toughest cnuts that have played in the Premiership. Alan Shearer took punishment that other players wouldn't have stomached, without much complaint in every game he played. He also dished plenty out. I actually think his respect and standing within the game, coupled with his Mary Poppins reputation and family man image helped him get away with an awful lot and when he trampled all over Neil Lennon, he wasn't afraid to use his position as England captain to help him get off lightly. And why fooking not!??

Nobody said Shearer isnt Hard.
He isnt a 'Hardman' though, not in the sense when lads discuss 'football hardmen', Shearer doesnt get a mention and rightly so.

It was a lovely bit of work from Shearer too. He was banged to rights caught out, jumping on Lennon's head and there was a huge call for him to be fined and banned. Shearer protested his innocence and strogly hinted he might find something else to do that forthcoming summer (1998) instead of leading England into the World Cup in France and promptly got away with it.
