Of course to lose Gerrard would be bad, however i do believe the key to our Nations success is David Beckham, lose him to injury (in the form he is in) and we would be knackered.

Steven Gerrard is much more influencial than David Beckham and would be a greater loss IMO.

We can beat Paraguay with or without Gerrard, I'd much rather rest him if he's anything below 95% fit and keep him for the other group games rather than him play Saturday and then miss the rest.

lol....do you honestly believe he won't be playing?.....

This has mind games written all over it, he says later down in the article that "he'll be there" - which he will be!! ;)

The Paraguay game is a vital one. We need to get off to a good start and show the rest of the cnuts we mean business. We need Gerrard to do this. If it's a risk for the rest of the tournement then of course it's not worth the risk. But if we can get him out there, we should!

Gerrards a better player at club level - he is yet to produce at International level, where as Beckham is a huge player for England involved in almost every goal we score - Sorry Rick but your wrong.

I've going to put either £10 on Germany and Poland winning tomorrow, it's little over an even money bet but I'm confident it will come off, or reduce the bet to £5 and put both England and Sweden to win on the same coupon with pays out at a little over 3/1.

They both are integral to this squad's success. The loss of either would be a big blow. I expect big things from Beckham this tournement, he owes us one and this'll possibly his last chance. Gerrad at this moment in time is the finest and most complete footballer on the planet and he has an heart of a lion. His loss would represent the biggest blow any team could suffer.

whether he plays in the first game or not it doesn't matter engalnd should beat paraguay without him. so long as he's fit for sweden that's all i'm bothered about. even if he/rooney doesn't play or misses a few games we have to rely on the squad not just the first team as i'm sure at some point someone will get injured or a ban.

that's the thing. you take a squad to the world cup for that exact reason. that whoever comes in should be able to do the job of the player missing.

if we complain that we'd have won the world cup if so and so was playing due to missing out through injury then we are showing that really we didn't have a good enough team to win it anyway.

Englands chances are good no matter what. One player does not make a whole team.

One player does not make a whole team.

You tell that to the Argies in 1986, if it was ever proven 1 man could have a say in who wins the world cup that was it.

In 1994 Roberto Baggio singlehandedly dragged Italy to the World Cup final only to be injured in the Semi's and play the final injured and be remembered for his miss over everything else.

One man doesn't make a whole team but he does make one hell of a difference.

Yes Maradona did make a difference but the rest of the team were fairly average. Besides he didn't score any of their 3 goals in the final though did he?

England is slightly different in that they have at least 4 or 5 world class players.
