Myself and my mate went to Old Trafford to see Man Yoo versus West Ham last night. My mate is a mate of the guy who was 4th official (who ended up reffing the game) so we had complimentaries as guests of one of the officials. These entitled us to be ale to park in the players carpark and use the players entrance and the Match Officials lounge etc :) The seats were top drawer as well.
It was my first ever visit to Old Trafford and whilst I was well impressed with the ground it definitley lacks atmosphere. When Fergie said you can hear the sweetie wrappers rustling he was right. There was almost 70k people in the ground and at times you could hear the players talking to one another. I dunno if it was cos we were in the "complimentaries" the people around us didn't seem football types either.
That said, I was a bit awestruck by the whole Man Yoo experience, it's a different world to what we are used to. The whole place and even in the pubs nearby is steeped in history of what is, wether you love em or hate them a great club. Personally I have a lot of time for them and they are fine ambassadors for the English game. However the only time I was starstruck was when I went for a piss at half time and outside the bogs we found ourselves next to Factory Records Founder, Former New Order/Joy Division Manager and subject of the Film 24 Hour Party People; Tony Wilson, I was too shy to say owt to him though :(
