View Full Version : FAO ED: PM's

I realise that I shouldn't have to ask about this, but it would appear that not everybody understands that if somebody sends you a PM then it for your eyes only, to reveal the contents of that PM on the public message board rather negates the system. I find it highly offensive, as I have no wish to know what people discuss in private; discussing issues raised on a public message board is fine, but if someone for whatever reason decides to discuss with you in private then that is a matter for the two people, not everybody on the public message board, and all other people who visit this board.

If somebody sends you a PM that they find abusive then they can complain directly to Ed.

Revealing personal and private information that you receive either by direct conversation, email, or pm's is completely unacceptable to me. This requires a level of discipline and integrity no matter what the provocation.

Can I suggest Ed, and I am not sure how you do it, but is it possible to prevent people quoting directly from a PM?

I am also not sure whether people on this board share the same value's, maybe people can pm you direct if they don't want to make their views public, or they could just add to this thread.

Ed, this, is obviously aimed at me and all i will say is this is a public forum where discussions and arguments etc take place every day...

Now i never asked for the PM facility provided nor do i believe i have ABUSED anybody rights by posting a thread using the contents of one..

The PM was part of an on going thread which then for some reason carried on via a PM... All i saw this as was a continuation of that thread so i reposted it and replyed..

If i have broken some written rule of this message board then please let me know as i must have missed this one. If it is a rule break then i will of course appologise.

Otherwise until such a rule is actually made then i will continue to do the same if i feel the need to.

Certain individuals should be more concerned over their own part in the thread that lead up to this in the first place before trying top become holy...http://www.smily.at/_private/weinen.gif

I will wait for your answer Mods.;)http://www.feebleminds-gifs.com/skeleton1.gif

The recipient of the PM is surely the owner of said message and free to do whatever he/she wants to do with it?? Abuse of this facility would be if a PM between two other folk was posted by a third party. The real abuse of the PM system would be when people use it as a means to intimidate or insult another party to which the sender of the message to tonyd would be the one guilty of abusing the facility. I can speak from personal experience when saying that the sender of the message to tonyd has got form for this kind of thing.

Cheers Chuckles....

I know im in the right here anyway...Once Edna Birch has thought about it she will hopefully realise the folly of her ways ;) ;)

ok then bright sparks, tell me what is the point of having a pm system? I do believe it says 'private messages' now correct me if I am wrong, but private means just that....if anybody on here wanted to use the public message board they would do so, however Ed decided that if you wished to convey 'private messages' then use the PM system. Now that doesn't mean 'oh I will blab because I want to tell everybody what somebody has just written to me' If you were offended by message then have a word with Ed, and I am sure he would make a judgement about the content and deliver a verdict.

If everybody decides to post private messages which they either think of as amusing, showing somebody up, or humilating anybody, it makes a mockery out of it, and it might as well be removed. So there you go fellas, keep it up and it will be withdrawn....

I also would dispute the legality of words that are written to you, the owner of any script be it letter, email, or pm would be the author not the recipient. Ask any author or journalist in the land............

This wasn't about legality in any event, which you two have diliberately 'mis-read' it was about values as can be read in my complaint.

so no re-think from Edna Birch..............just more of the same;)

We don't actually have a specific rule that addresses this at the moment.

My own view would be that PM stands for Private Message and as such that is how they should remain.

We will discuss further and clarify the official stance.

ChuckleBantam

As stated, I will share anything that lands in my Inbox anywhere I please, given that as recipient of the message, I am the owner of it, therefore freedom of speech dictates as long as it isn't offensive, I can do waht I want with it.

This also takes us onto another issue with PM's, can the moderators see other peoples, PM's? If so they aren't PRIVATE are they??

BG. I didnt want to be Pm'd. Pms are for people WHO BOTH WANT TO privately talk to each other.

If Ranger had ASKED me on the OPEN forum i would have told him that.

Petition for that Edna....

I NEVER ASKED FOR THE PM AND WOULDNT BE BOTHERED IF IT DISAPPEARED.....

A Private message to me on a site like this would be for the Mods to ask questions or reprimand folk or for friends to exchange personal info.

NOT for someone to continue a thread in a snide way.

Typical of individuals to be so holy over a PM message whilst so saintly posting threads on sick jokes... Of which by the way this is the sole cause of.... Or did you forget about that BG...... PMSFL...

The moderators can't see PMs.

A PM does not just involve the recipient, it also involves the sender, who has rights of confidentiality as well.

Having done a bit of research on this, my understanding of the legal position is that the producer of a piece of writing (ie the sender of the PM) owns the copyright of the message and that receiving a PM only gives you authorisation to read it, not to reproduce it in any way without permission.

The Data Protection Act may also have implications if the sender of a PM is identified in a public manner with specific information attached to them.

tony d
09-24-2005, 06:33 PM
If the sender requires confidentiality then HE/SHE should first enquire via the open forum or indeed a simple yes/no PM, to find out if the intended recipient does wish to be PM'd at all. Just because a facility is available doesnt mean that everone wishes to use that system.

Maybe Ed could look at allowing the blocking of the PM facility for individual members or against just certain members.

It works both ways here Baldy:(

I agree that if you do not want to receive PMs from someone you should be able to opt not to, and if you feel you are being harrassed then report it to the mods and action will be taken. I'm not sure if the software is configured to allow PMs to be blocked or not.

However, the question of whether the PM should or should not have been sent has no bearing on the matter of whether it can be posted publicly. 2 wrongs do not make a right.

I'm off out for the night now. See y'all later.

If you don't want to have PM's then you should ask Ed to remove it from your services, or have made it public that you did not want other people sending you pm's, not publicise them on a public message board, or you could have simple hit the reply button, and told the person that you don't want PM's, it required just the same amount of energy.

Secondly I do not accept your analysis or view on the usual round of jokes, when a tragedy occurs. So there you go you can have as many temper tantrums as you like, it will not alter my view of my own behaviour.

Well none of that makes any sense to me TD. I was under the impression that you were angry/mad as you posted one of those little red angry faces.

Not sure why I should read my posts, I compose them, if you mean do I check them for spelling and grammar, well sometimes, but mostly I can't be bothered.

From what you have posted you are suggesting I am a hypocrite, well that would be your view; I personally do not think that I am, but maybe others will have a different view; if you are suggesting that I do not have any respect for people who have died and their relatives then you would be wrong. I do not accept that as a human being we should always walk around with poe faces because somebody has died and even more so when we are not directly affected. Humour is a human condition, it is what we do, we do it in all walks of life and situations in life and in death. I am not afraid of death, nor am I afraid to die either. If you mean something different then you will have to explain.

I posted this post on the public message board because I wanted some discussion about morals, values and the use of the public message board. I could have done this all behind your back, not my style, it is upfront and open to everybody; the sort of thing a hypocrite does or would that be too presumptious?

I didn't read up on any internet law; however what BB has posted does not surprise me. I knew about the author of any written content, just because it one of those things that I remembered. Internet Law will mostly likely follow the pattern. Anything that is stored electronically is subject to the Data Protection Act; emails, pm's and other written word that is stored about a person, can be come within the jurisdication of the Data Protection Act. If someone is upset, by what is written, they may well decide to invoke the Data Protection Act.

That is place where you need to start looking, but I am not an expert on the DPA. I imagine all internet activity comes within the DPA, but I may well be wrong.

Just so you know, This board has two great features both accessible from your OWN user control panel:

1: Buddy/Ignore List: which means you can block a certain person from messaging you and also make it so you don't have to read what they put in public forums.

2: There is also an option in your CP to turn PM's off.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's not get started on any internet laws and regulations as each and every single one that protects UK citizens counter acts each other and makes them null and void. However, Tony - your connecting through a german telco - There laws are somewhat very strict and if BG reported you to your ISP for posting Private information in public they could take you to court and you'd get a nice fine.

Thanks for the clarification Ed. Just so everybody knows I will not be reporting anybody, this is a fun facility as far as I am concerned. In any event if wasn't me who had their pm posted on a public message board. I was raising it for a debate and discussion about how we treat our fellow city fans.
Respect for their privacy is something that should be a given, in my view.

From a personal stance anyone who sends a PM to me, will have that PM kept confidential no matter what the content is.
Anyone who I feel I can't trust to keep a PM confidential will not receive one from me.
I've sent and received over 500 PM's and had no problem with anyone so far and they all have kept all info sent confidential and all info received has also been kept confidential. The only info which is shared from a PM by myself is one which is directed to the moderation of the board which is only shared between the moderators.

here we go twiddle dee and twiddle dum..............yes they should remain private chuckle, but I have sneaky feeling that my pm to you will not, or have you already forwarded it to twiddle dum? NO? ah well no doubt it will reach the msg board before very long, and I know for a fact it will be correct, because I also copied in a couple of the mods in to make sure of that fact..... wasn't going to get caught out with that again, trusting people's integrity, it is afterall standard practice when emailing. Now did I inform you I was doing that, or did I do that behind your back? I could have said all I wanted to say to you on the msg board, nothing in my pm that will surpise anyone, been saying it now for a couple of weeks.

The reason I pm'd you was I wanted to keep the integrity of the board intact, and not to bore people witless with your nasty sly digs at me, and me not being a female door mat and most definately not knowing my place would respond. Not to mention twiddle dum's complusive posting disorder:rolleyes:

There you go all that after a night out in Leeds, fantastic, not bad for an old bag out on the lash was it, but it was a bugger getting all the fork handle wax out of me hair, I looked like Jacko with me hair all stuck up:D
