Bristol City have appointed Gary Johnson as the managerial successor to Brian Tinnion.

The former Cambridge United and Latvia boss leaves his position at West Country rivals Yeovil Town to take charge at Ashton Gate after both clubs agreed a compensation payment on Friday.

Johnson's move to become the new Robins manager will come as a major disappointment to everyone at Huish Park.

His appointment at Yeovil boss in the summer of 2001 saw him lead the Somerset outfit through its most successful period as a club.

Under Johnson, The Glovers won promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history in the 2002/03 season .

Their second season as a league club last term saw Yeovil claim the League Two title and promotion to League One for the current campaign.

His success with Yeovil did not go unnoticed but he remained loyal to The Glovers when he turned down previous managerial opportunities at Championship sides Coventry City and Derby County.

However, Johnson has decided that the City job was too good an opportunity to pass up and he takes over a side in real need of a boost, with The Robins second from bottom in the table after a woeful start to the new season.

Yeovil, meanwhile, have appointed first team coach Steve Thompson as caretaker boss.
