If anybody happens to be in or passing through Belgium shortly, the Ommegang festival is worth a visit. 1 - 3 July. The website is worth a look, just to laugh at the English translation.

There's some real horse-back jousting, between Belgian, French and British jousters, parades, pageants and I think some fireworks. It's expensive to watch the main event on the Grand Place from the grandstands though.

Perhaps more of interest to most folk and with more realistic prior notice is the Belgian beer weekend, on the Grand Place, Brussels 5 - 7 September. In recent years the weather has been fantastic that weekend and I hope it'll be the same this year.

Entry is free. People from all over the world come to this event and it's amazing to see so many folk getting happily pizzed. Never seen any trouble there at all.

There's another one a week after on 13 - 14 September. Has pretty good food there an' all. This one's mostly indoors, if the weather's dodgy.

While in Brussels, try the pubs referred to in here.

Belgium really is the place to drink beer. Chockies are fantastic too.

Belgium is a nice place, its just a pity about the people that live there.
I know some call you a wishy washy hand wringing liberal, but even they are worse than you, having said that, know wonder you love it over there:rolleyes:.

You can tell their is a massive French influence when the country petitioned to have the football team removed from the European Championship. The cowards thought they would be wupped and thought it best to surrender before a ball had even been kicked in anger. The liberals thought it would be best to pull the team out roflmao: You couldnt make it up

Somebody's made it up. Are you thinking of Austria? They speak German in Austria. Belgium are not in the competition by following the same route as England - they didn't qualify.

Anyhow, about those beer festivals....

Anything which gets me pissed quickly, inexpensively and which is widely available (ie draught lager in the pub) is fine by me - i'll leave the pretentious, overpriced foreign shit and real ale to the geeks who knit yoghurt in their sandals and dungarees whilst listening to Lindisfarne and steeleye span!!

Getting pissed on draught lager in a pub would get you pissed slower and cost more than, say, 12 bottles of Duvel.

I drank a bottle of red wine in a pub the other week - I felt like a right ponce. It was my last fiver, though and the bottle did enough to drown my sorrows.

I posted information about events in Belgium in the Travel and Tourism section, for those who are interested, or travelling in and around Belgium or for people looking for ideas to do something different. Information offered for free, take it or leave it.

There's no obligation to respond if you're not interested.

The second item I put was the Belgian Beer Weekend in Brussels. They beer is priced correctly, as domestically produced products should be and, as well as getting you pissed, may be of a certain minimum quality too. They may be over-priced in Britain, being marketed as premium exports but they are sold here at prices unavailable in UK. Stuff passed off as lager in Britain is fake and like fizzy pizz anyway and more expensive than real Belgian beer.

Similés about knitting yoghurt in sandals etc etc were quite amusing when they were new. Is that all about me? Anyway, as long as you are having fun Matt. I'll try to feed you some other topics in other forums for you to try and ridicule. Got to keep you busy , eh?. Must go prepare my muesli in a wok now before the life sciences camp-fire group therapy and meditation session.

Oh and by the way, cheers!

Note in particular the exquisite colour coordination between the woven lavatory seat and the floor mat.

Inside the lavatory bowl is in fact the prototoype quorn consommé, which is earmarked to replace the Oxo served at Valley Parade next season.

Very tasty is Quorn, if you accept that it tastes fuck all like any kind of meat then it's a nice enough ingredient on it's own merits.
