View Full Version : Premiership Snobbery

After another exciting finish at both ends of the Championship today, i was sickened by the media,in particular Talksport.
The players from West Brom and Stoke had barely got off the pitch and the so-called experts were forecasting they would come straight back down and they weren't worthy!!!
Also they were going on about Stoke never having been in the top flight before as if football didn't exist before Sky and the premiership!!!..............absolutely pathetic journalism.
Do these people never learn? Remember Rodney Marsh and City!!!!
Statisically, its only ever happened that all three go straight back down.
The snobbery of the media is a disgrace.

Indeed, its all part of the Sky hype. Stoke were a good team for many years, particularlly in the 60's and 70's, when they won the League Cup and even played in Europe. What gets me is that the Championship is ultra competive with practically everyone having something to play for today. Unlike the Prem where every year we know the top three or four from the start.
As for talksport; thats editorial order from the highest level; owner was a major hyper of the Prem and Sky at its inception.
Is this the lowest points total in championship to win and come 2nd ???? if not its very low and i fully expect them to come back down, but i wish them all the best

I think West Brom have a slight chance of staying up as long as they sort out their defence. Stoke don't have a chance in hell in my opinion though, it'll be Derby all over again!

Sunderland managed It and Brum still have a chance.

Did Reading a few years ago?
Ok they are on their way down now this season but did alright last season, narrowly missing out on a Euro place.
Money helps I agree, but its not essential to staying up in the Prem IMO.

Exactly, Wigan have hardly broken the bank in the last 3 years have they? How much brass have Blackburn and Bolton spent over the past few years? It's as much to do with astute management than anything else.

JS, have you not learnt about talksport yet? They are about as much use at informing you of football issues as a piece of izal toilet paper is at cleaning your arse.
Listen to it for a laugh, don't take it seriously. Mike Parry is the most obnoxious pratt I have ever heard try to talk about football.

Stoke will be down with the Fairy Lights and West Brom will last till the Easter Egg Wrappers go in the bin. That's not Premiership Snobbery, it's just a sad fact.

Reading pissed there league did they not ?
Stoke got promoted from a competitive or poor Championship.
Stoke will struggle massively if they don't spend 20 million + anyone can see that

The way to see the Premiership as interesting is to view it as 4 separate competitions. Yes, you know roughly whereabouts the teams will finish, but you don't know the exact order and that's what's to watch.
You have the league of 3 - Man U, Chelsea and Arsenal, and any one of those could win it. That's a league by itself.
You then have a mini league of about 9 teams below them in with a shout of getting the 4th spot - Liverpool have won it for the last few seasons, but it's getting more open. Everton, Portsmouth, Villa, Tottenham, Newcastle, Blackburn, West Ham and Man City will all be in the running for it next season, and whilst I would still expect Liverpool to come 4th I don't think it's necessarily an automatic thing.
Then there is the 5 teams below them, who are fighting not to get dragged in to the relegation battle. That's probably the least interesting bit - no chance of glory, and probably going to be safe. But at least one is probably going to go down, and the question is picking out which one.
Finally you have the newly promoted teams. Whilst they are all favourites to go down when the season starts, chances are at least one of them will stay up - the question is which one.
I enjoy the Premiership, much more so since we started the Fantasy Football thing and it gives you an incentive to keep track of individual players. I've got a lot more out of it the last couple of seasons.

You said anyone club that gets promoted to the Prem needs £40m to stay up, i merely pointed that Reading didn't and finished in the top half, others have since mentioned the likes of Wigan, Bolton and Blackburn.
I wouldn't back Stoke to stay up but its not impossible!

Your right you said £20m :sorry:
I still think a club like Stoke could stay up spending less than that though as long as they had an astute manager who brings in the right players.

I think you'll be surprised. They've been paying premiership wages out for the last two years now & tbh i expected them to have promotion in the bag long before the last day.
They will find it tough but they have much more quality than Derby imo, and will no way give up the ghost like Derby have.

They are right though all three teams that go up will always be faves to come back down.. That isnt bad or snobby journalism it's just the way it goes...
Unless the three teams going up do a Reading and get lucky with keeping the same squad and going for it
OR they buy extremeley wisely to keep their noses just above the parapit then of course they will be relegation fodder..
BB is right in the way the leagues are split but next term (honestly not joking here) if Liverpool get Barry and a decent left midfielder and centre half they will be challenging for the title...
The League should be a straight top four race only Rafa stops it being that way..
I hope Palace go up Warnock has done wonders there.... If Palace go up i would say them and WBA would stay up... Depends what Stoke do in the summer...Or how good Pulis is with his tactics and player management..

cant agree with you on the barry issue he wont improve the team whatsoever Lucas and Mascherano are by far better players than him. We need 2 quality wingers another proven forward to play off torres and a right back I think were well stocked in the centre back position With Carra..Agger...Skrtel..and hobbs looking good for next season.Your right about Rafa though unfortunately the only people who dont see it are the anfield faithfull

I rate him above all bar Torres, Skrtel and Gerard in your current crop...
But hey you are a TV armchair Liverpool fan and im sure you have seen on the Andy Gray replays something a bit more than i have had to struggle through in the Mighty finished by Xmas in all comps Liverpool side...

Gareth Barry is a better player than Hypia, agger, Voronin, leto, finnan, arbeloa, carragher, riise, kewell, alonso, pennent, nemeth, benayoun, lucas (the sub), kuyt, mascherano and Babel....
BTW thats the Liverpool squad, dont know if Sky show the full squad so some of those names may look a bit strange to you..
Lucas cannot even get in the first team try tuning in to the live game before the last 20 minutes and you would know that..
No one else in that squad bar Babel at a push is as good as Barry.. Now your lengthy repostes are hard to argue against as your defence is so well worded and thoughtful..
But Please Lucas better than Barry when he doesnt even play, Kewell a better wnger??? Nope Pennent??? nope..... nemeth, benayoun, lucas (the sub), mascherano (the smiling baffoon) better in the centre.. Get real .......

Lucas is shit - Barry is a much better player.
Also Liverpool have a quality RB in Finan, Arbeloa is turd, Aurelio is the original sicknote and with Riise being told he has no place at Anfield a LB is a must.
Sad thing is, Raffa doesnt know what he's got. He chops and changes far too much - he will spend big on another forward this summer - yet he already has the perfect partner for Torres in Chouch - who will leave to partner Defoe at Pompey........so frustrating its unberlievable!!
