The Conformist (1970)

Before you dismiss this as some poncey, arty foreign film consider that it has been cited by Scorsese and Coppala as having a huge influence on their work. If you enjoyed the Godfather of Apocolypse Now, this has the same cinematographer and has the some of the same look and feel as those films and many seventies and eighties classics.
I saw it for the second time last week and was impressed not just how it looks, but the way a complex plot is held together and is easy to follow. Great acting by all the principles and the period detail is stunning.
Well worth n evening out and you will see lots of scenes that remind of you other great films, but this was made before them.
Highly recommended.
