Many folk are saying the pilot is a hero - he's a bit of a dick IMO for attempting to land with the crosswinds being what they were.....probably a bit of an ego thing to see if his skill could land the plane in such conditions!!
Kudos to him for getting the passengers down safely, but i don't think his employers will be too impressed with the new wingtip the plane will need!!
Altho in saying that - what were air traffic control thinking directing planes to that runway!!

I thought Air traffic control had the final say on whether someone could land or not?

The pilot in that scenario has the choice as to whether he lands or not - he's in control of the "vehicle" and is ultimately responsible for the passengers - he'd have known of the crosswinds as he made the descent, i find it strange that he chose to carry on landing whilst he was being blown everywhere!!
I also find it equally strange tho that ATC (who also know the wind conditions) directed a plane to that runway when there was another runway 90 degrees to that one which didn't suffer from the crosswinds and which the plane eventually landed on!!
How much fuel did it have left, what was the schedule like for the other runway, what was the airspace above the airport like so he could circle about on it for another half an hour until the wind stopped or the plane fell out of the sky?
I'm not an expert or owt but if my pilot got me down safely in those conditions I'd be pretty happy!
