Just beat me too it, some may say he retired a while agojawdrop:
Great news for Beer Bantamjump:
To be honest why doesnt he play against Rotherham next tuesday night then retire with immediate effect, this season is effectively over. Bring back Ainge or blood someone else. If we are loosing with wethers/clarke at the back why not lose with clarke/another at the back and wait for bowser to return (or will he sign for burnley in the summer:flame:)
The plot thickens

Talk about under-rated. Wetherall is a true City legend and model professional, he has been a fantastic servant for BCFC and is up there alongside McCall and Beagrie for me:chick:

Aye.. his service cannot be denied and 'the' goal aginst Liverpool will live on in our memories forever.
Many fans though associate him with our decline and he will not reach legendary status in their eyes.

Yep - how many other 'Legends' boast 3 relegations as both captain & manager in such a short period of time - for any club, nevermind city!
And now to two years coaching - earning more than Stu too, nice!!:chatter:

I think its time for him to finish but you make it sound as if he's solely and personally responsible for the decline. Plenty of other players could and would have jumped ship.
I remember Windass saying he wouldn't play in League 2!!! Wonderful loyalty from someone who won't be a legend in my eyes

Beer, take your blinkers off and actually give the guy the credit he deserves. Arguably he has played on too long with his pace suffering but he has been consistently one of the best players we have had even in those years where we have gone down. If he has been so bad it doesn't say a lot for the rest of the players we have had, does it?
I would offer him the legend status, albeit not quite up there with McCall, Hendrie, Beagrie et al but certainly on a par with Jacobs and the like.

I dont think our decline is all wethers fault. He's very over-rated imo and a poor captain. A good center half in his day - but thats all.
Jantje, surely your not naive enough to think that if anyone else higher up than us had come in for him offering him the same money he wouldnt have gone??
We have had to sacrifice quality players from our wage bill like Deano & JJ whilst Wethers has remained because no-one wants him.
Windass actually said in his book that he couldnt of seen himself playing in L2 but, make no mistake, if last January Hull had been prepared to take Wethers from us and we had of kept Deano - we would still be in L1.
Wethers contract is a burden that we need to lose - unfortunately it doesnt run out for two more years after this one.
I doubt he'll be on the same wage as a coach, it will be a different contract and as he's retired we don't have to honour the contract he's on now.

"He will link up with Stuart McCall and Wayne Jacobs as first-team coach - although he will retain his playing registration if needed."
He's simply hanging up his boots/moving sideways - he hasnt retired or cancelled his contract - he isnt stupid, you dont slaughter a cash cow. Didnt you know he has a degree:rolleyes:

I agree he would have left if the right offer would have come along but along with securing his own future, he helped the clubs financial problems be slightly less painful.

Coventry City offered him a contract when we were in Administration, he wanted to stay and even confessed Coventry were offerring more money.
Was the rumour about manchester city true though?

Doesn't mean he'll keep his playing contract though.

Leave off him Beer mate. Ok his decline as a player has matched our decline as a club but he was important when we were in the Prem and played a very important role during our two admins, as PFA rep in the first if I remember correctly. He could have moved on but stayed loyal and I think it would be good to keep him around the place.

Only an idiot wouldn't see that he's more than capable at this level. It's also another position that the funds aren't there to fill, to worry about next season too. Like Geoffrey Richmond, Tony Blair and Sven Goran Eriksson, the daft whingers don't know what they have, until it's gone and Bower, Clarke and A.N Other from the Shitpool vyinng for the Centre Half Spots next season aren't going to deliver that promotion that 99.9% of Claret and Amber Posters expect at the start of every season.

He is a legend in his own right here at VP and he will be getting a big cheer for me every time he even kicks a ball this season at VP, and in his inevitable testimonial in a year or so. Very honest that he has admitted that his legs have gone, and deserves to bow out with dignity. What a player what a gentleman!!

The man himself has admitted he can no longer do the things he wants or needs to do so your wrong Chucks, you can't have seen much of him this season.
He deserves to be classed as a City legend and , yes, we will miss him , but i'm just glad he's got the wisdom to see that time won't wait for anyone. He's been a great servant to the club and deserves all the plaudits he'll no doubt receive.

His legs may be going but he still reads the game better than anyone in this division, he is a City legend and he will be sorely missed, its unfortunate that he was at the club whilst we were on the decline, but only an idiot would slag him off or not appreciate what he has put into this club - both as a player and a thoroughly decent bloke!!
He played a huge part in making sure we even had a club to support - without his negotiations as PFA rep at the club we may not have had the wage deferrals which helped save the club, he personally has lost a lot of what was owed to him - those who slag him should have a bit more fucking respect to not only a great servant as a player, but someone who unselfishly put the best interests of the club before themselves!!

Sorry Matt, but this Wethers/Jesus shit really doesnt wash with me. Through both admins he was wiser than the rest. Carbone, Ward & a couple others lost what was owed to them - as did the ones who terminated their contracts during admin.
Wethers indeed had wage deferals and extended his contract (3 times) taking lower wages over a longer length of time. He's got it all back though!!
As i'v said a million times before, if he'd of walked during either admin he wouldnt have picked up a contract half as lucrative at any other club as the one he's had at city.
That said, i agree he's been a good centre half (until 2006) for City.
