I'm reading Mayada: Daughter of Iraq by Jean Sasson. The fourth book I have read by her (Princess, Daughters of Arabia and then Desert Royal) and I highly recommend them.

Mayada was thrown into one of Saddam's torture jails in the late 1990s and this documents her life in there as well as her family's contribution to the establishment of Iraq in the 1920s.

JS, I may read that book if they have it at the library. I would be interested to know whether they really did have spirit to play for their country or whether they had no choice. Sickening the things that went on, are still going on and went on before Saddam was even known by anyone. Makes me think they have always been a barbarous people. :(

No need, JPH has it and likes to quote passages to us from time to time. tup: jawdrop:

I've just finished "Suite Francaise". It was written during the 2nd world war by a 3rd generation jew from Russia who was living in France after fleeing Russia around 1920. It's set around the time of the occupation of France. The sad thing is that the author didn't make it through the war, she was taken to Austwitz in 1942 and never came out. (Irene Nerimevski)
The novel itself went unpublished for years until about 2005 I think and it was translated to English last year. It's in 2 parts, the first, people fleeing the towns as the Germans invade, and the 2nd, about the occupation. Excellent book!

I'm now reading "The Bastard of Istanbul". Only a few chapters in but it's about a bastard. From Istanbul.

Im currently reading Russell Brand's My Booky Wook which is surprisingly a pretty good read so far.

It tells a very honest account of him being sexually abused as a boy but he puts his own comedic slant on what would normally be a dark subject

I'm now reading In the Name of Honour which is about an illiterate woman in Pakistan sentenced to be gang raped after it was claimed her brother had an affair.

Only on the first chapter and not sure whether it will be for me, but I will try to persist. Her brother was 12 years old at the time and although there is no evidence of any wrongdoing, the woman was gang raped in front of her village.

When this happens it is expected that the woman will commit suicide but she instead goes on to tell the world about what happened to her and fight for women's rights.

Hmmm, not sure what difference she will make or indeed whether her fight is as big as this book claims but I will read on and perhaps find out.
