Went to see the Pistols at the Brixton Academy and I was somewhat underwhelmed really. I couldn’t help but to draw comparisons with when I first saw them 21 years ago at the Nags Head in High Wycombe. On that occasion there was an audience of 25, of which 5 were a film crew from France. Eight people walked out before the end and the band only kept going because of the presence of said film crew. Anyway, that gig was amazing because I had never seen or heard anything like it before, whereas last night it was all too predictable.

Rotten has turned into an accomplished performer but sometimes seemed to parodying himself. The band were tight and provided a driving rhythm but when you listen to the actual songs, they are really just mid paced, orthodox rock songs. OK lyrically the songs were shocking and relevant once but today they seem so dated. For example the last verse of Anarchy in the UK mentions the MPLA, IRA and UDA, all of whom are part of power sharing governments. Interestingly, the highlights of the show for me were when they did other peoples songs; Iggy’s No Fun and Jonathan Richman’s Roadrunner as a second encore, which was great.

The crowd, mostly blokes in their forties, loved it but I just thought it was all a bit of an irrelevance. A professional show and perhaps worth seeing if you haven’t seen them before but certainly not worth the £37.50!

Wouldn't expect a lot after 30 years. PUNK was for a certain time, a time past and whilst it has had a modicum of influence on the rock scene, it is minute compared to what came before(no I don't mean glam rock!). It never evolved really and I think Public Image LTD were much better anyway.

Tight? mmm... not really the punk ethos.

Just got back from seeing the Sex Pistols at MEN Arena.

Saw Chris Cooper there, but not to talk to.

Great show but weird audience. Not much shouting before the first encore and then loads walked out after the first encore so we didn't get a second encore like they did at all the Brixton gigs.

Yes loads walked out after the first encore at Brixton but Rotten came out and said "now the those w@nkers have f#cked off we'll do a new song".

Comedy band. They were in 1977 and they are now.

The Sixties had the Scaffold. The Seventies The Pistols. The Eighties Madness. The Nineties Blur and The Noughties The Darkness. Every decade throws one up.

Show me another band that can match phenomonal record sales AND sell out the stadiums 25 years on from their formation or tell me when Bono is going to show up on, I'm a Nomark, Get me out of Here and I won't treat that remark with the piss taking contempt it really deserves.

They weren't a comdey band until Sid Vicious joined. Unlike the Scaffold or the Darkness they were actually innovative and doing something new. And unlike Echo and the Bunnymen rip off merchants U2 they didn't keep going until well after their sell by date. They are an irrelevance now though.

U2 were decent enough in their earlier days before Bono became one of the most pretentious self- important supercilious twats on the planet.

Early U2 - War, Boy and October are classics, went downhill after the Joshua Tree - altho Pop and Achtung Baby are worth a listen - been shite since!
Take away the Parklife album and Blur aren't a comedy band - amazing live, and all great musicians in their own right, "Modern life is rubbish" is one of the greatest albums of the 90's and would deffo be in my top ten of all time!!

You used to love the Darkness BTW Dave

BTW have to agree re the Sex Pistols - never got em at all, always thought they were shite, the Jam, Clash, Ramones etc who were far, far superior did more for the genre than they ever did!!

You know what i mean - you can listen to certain groundbreaking bands/artists from times gone by and "get" them - Chuck Berry, Led Zeppelin etc - never "got" the pistols tho - poor musicians, poor vocally, poor songs - yep i know they were much more than that, but at the end of the day surely the priority for a band is to actually write decent music?

I was there and even back then i thought bands like the Stranglers, Clash, Ramones and even lesser known ones like Penetration & Richard Hell & Television were far more ground breaking than the Pistols who seemed a bit too manufactured and gimmicky for my liking

When the pisotls first arrived on the scene they were one of the very first of their kind. Strummer was still playing R&B with the 101ers when the Pistols were hijacking gigs and starting riots. It was the shock of the new and their instant notoriety helped accelerate the growth of punk exponentially. I agree they were musically limited and as I said in my original post; the songs are just mid paced orthodox rock. Of the others mentioned the Ramones were truly groundbreaking, when I saw them they were supported by the Talking Heads, brilliant gig. The Dammed were the first to get a record out, Neat, Neat, Neat. Nver rated the stranglers, too posey and too much pre-punk keyboard noodling. Buzzcocks, Sham 69, the Jam, the Ruts and Australia's the Saints were all a good night out in the early days.

How long did Backstreet boys or New Kids on the Block last for???

Hasn't Kylie been going 25 years yet??? She sells out for fun world wide as does Maddonna ...Neither are musical geniuses are they... Just fill a niche for impressionable folk...

U2 were good when they didn't take themselves so seriously...

Never bought into the hype surrounding Bono or his music... Just cos you like em Dave doesnt make em any good does it???

Nor does their records sales it just means that there is a lot of gullible folk out there...

BTW...

Never liked the Beatles, Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Pistols, Stones after the 70's if not slightly earlier, Elvis, ramones, etc etc etc...

Never bought into what folk make out is so great about em...

It does however always make me laugh to be told by same folk that to not like these bands for any reason makes you know nothing about music...

I agree with most of that KB apart from Achtung Baby which is a quality album IMO tup:

They've gone downhill since then though, coinciding with Bono disappearing up his own arsehole tdwn:

'Timeless Melody' is my favourite track of thiers & 'There she goes' is the easiest thing in the world to play on Guitarjump:
