As theres a few people on xbox live that frequent these forums C&B would be a good place to ask!
How do i connect to xbox live? I have had a 360 for some time now and only used it for fifa with my mates but I got hooked on Halo 3 and desperate to play online. I only have the core system so i have ordered a hard drive already but when i try to connect i always get the same error,
DNS failed?
Is this because of the missing hard drive? I only have a 64mb memory card at moment but to be honest i think its something more technical than that.
Im connecting the ethernet cable directly to the modem, my friend says this is only possible if you disconnect the PC from the modem but my PC is connected to the modem in a different port, a USB one that is kind of square not rectangle.
Its all confusing for me but somebody must know :D
Thanks

Pretty sure most ADSL "modem"s allow connection via either the USB port or the ethernet port - not both. Your "modem" may also need configuring to enable the ethernet port but it's unlikely. Just make sure the "modem" has a power supply plugged in (because some of them power from the USB cable) and that your ethernet lead is a straight patch lead. (ie: it shouldn't have the words x-over of crossover printed anywhere on it... although this isn't 100% accurate)

Good old Microsoft Knowledge Base should point you in the right direction...

Virgin media/Blueyonder. Rang the customer support team, they gave me the DNS number which i input on the 360 and still no joy tdwn:

Ok so when you get an Xbox and IF you get any free days of Xbox Live do you just plug your internet into the Xbox and Voila?

It could be the lead, it isn't one from the actual xbox because i only have core so it was not included in the package. I got the lead a while ago to connect both my computers together to share the internet. it has blue writing all over it but not x-over.
Thanks

Did you connect your PCs together directly? (IE: no hub / device in between)
If so - that lead is a crossover cable and you will need a straight patch.

I think I saw that there was a pack where you got like a month or a few days free when you first buy the 360

If you are new to Xbox live, when you register as a new user, you get a month's free Xbox live gold membership.

That must be what I saw then.

Thanks, this must be the problem. I have an official xbox ethernet on order now, hopefully this solves the problem. jump:

There is a way to check your lead to see if it's a crossover - if you look at the end and check the colours of the wires - both ends should have all the colours in the same order. A crossover cable has a couple of wires in a different order at the other end.
