SKY Sports Article with Terry (http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=457372&CPID=219&clid=114&lid=&title=Terry:+I+would+play+for+nothing&channel=Euro+2008&)

"Take the money away and every single player in this squad would want to be involved in the next game. I would play for England for nothing.

"Of course, the money is fantastic but when I was a youngster coming through I played for nothing and my attitude hasn't changed since then.

"Take the money away and I would still be the first player into training the following morning."

England players were the targets of angry fans and sections of the media after Saturday's goalless draw with Israel, but Terry insists he is 100 per cent committed to playing for his country.

"People should know how I feel about playing for England. I get excited when I'm packing my bags before I come away with the squad. That's how much it means to me," he added.

Is it just me or is anyone else a little disturbed by the comments? I don't expect them not to be paid in this money-mad day and age of football, but I'd expect more than "I get excited when I'm packing my bags ....That's how much it means to me.".

I'd want a Churchillian response. I don't care about the money, it's all about wearing that shirt with pride, being proud to represent your country, it's an honour and a privilege and I am truly blessed to be in a position to be able to do it, it means absolutely everything to me and I hope I can do myself proud and not let any of the fans down.

Oh and if the money isn't important, how's about give it to charity.

I'd rather us go back to the days when they weren't paid to play for England.

To be honest, for some of the knob heads that follow england and then on the saturday abuse the same players because they play for a different club if i was a player i wouldn't be arsed as much about playing for my country as i would my club say in a european cup final, fa cup final.

that's just my attitude though cos i'd always put club before country anyway.

I know what you mean, even at City we had fans having a go at Beckham and Shearer simply because they are absolutely shit-hot or were at the time. The same fans are then cheering them on in an England game. The best players took it in their stride and used the abuse to spur them on knowing the more abuse you get the better you are as a player.

I would walk over hot coals to play for my country.

aye i think beckham was the perfect example from 98 to that greece game in 2001 as to the attitudes of the fans.

if i'd have been beckham, i'd have told all the press and fans to fook off after the greece game just for the way they treated him after france.

as for england, can bring myself to want to see for example liverpool and chelsea players doing well and cheering them on because week in week out i hate em.

Or my club or any competative game, I think the problem now is that players feel they have a gift and they get paid to show it off -- but if is difficult and they have to dig deep and put in that extra 10% they dont want to know -- these sort of players would never get in my team, club or country -- exibition matches only

they should't get paid for playing for their country end of story. and the fact that they do, well the only way forward is, as you say, donate it to charity rather than gamble between your mates, give it to the wag or give to the bookies. oh, i have such a bad opinion of footy players!

Shame Stevie G didn't get the job he would of said that stuff...

WHAT A DISGRACE that the England captain didn't let rip eh...

Lucky he does on the pitch...

Gerard for Captain...

PMSFL SFB....

He has already said all that and he leads well on the pitch and is a good captain too...

Funny yet again..........

Tone, have I adopted the position of PK or what? You seem to have it in for me today! If Stevie G had said the same I'd still say what I said. Terry may mean what I posted but he didn't say it. I'm not questioning his commitment, more the issue of why players are paid to play for England, it isn't like they don't get paid enough already!

Personally I don't think players should get any monetary reward for representing their country other than added zeros to their transfer fee and ultimately increased wages at Club level because they are of international pedigree. Terry has recently been rumoured to be asking for the highest wage Chelsea have ever paid, which should be reward enough and is in part due to his place in the England squad, the fact he is then paid again at England level is ridiculous. I assume though that he is taxed in full!

I think we're on the same wavelength but for some reason you and I aren't speaking the same language! ;)

Shakespeare has the words. The St Crispin's Day speech:

Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host,
That he which hath no stomach to this fight,
Let him depart; his passport shall be made
And crowns for convoy put into his purse:
We would not die in that man's company
That fears his fellowship to die with us.
This day is called the feast of Crispian:
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when the day is named,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian:'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars.
And say 'These wounds I had on Crispin's day.'
Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember with advantages
What feats he did that day: then shall our names.
Familiar in his mouth as household words
Harry the king, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester,
Be in their flowing cups freshly remember'd.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remember'd;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

SFB mate,
Why single him out though they all get paid and i'm sure if someone offered you another wage for doing your job you wouldn't say no...

The players will not of asked to be paid when it all started...

I agree for country they should not get paid but they do...

My point was that you singled out JT and were having a pop at his comments...It would get pretty boring if he did the same play for the badge and pride speech every interview..

He is one of the best players if not the best player at Chelsea position orientated. Why should he give up his extra wage just because it upsets those who do not play???

It only seems i am having a go at you today mate cos you have posted things of interest to me...

I didn't single him out, he did an interview and his comments are public, I'm not aware of any other player who has done the same or similar interview.

I accept perhaps he could have worded it better, but it's the principle not necessarily the man I am aiming my criticism at. he is after all the captain and no doubt leads by example, therefore his words could be taken as being representative of the team ethos.

St Crispin's Day is the 25th October. The speech is from Henry V, set just before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415 when a vastly outnumbered English force gave the French a good kicking.

Glad you like the sig - it caught my fancy.

A good kicking of the French never did you any harm! Shame we don't carry on the tradition. ;) Meant in jest and with the obvious link to the historical rivalry.

Amazing we have to draw on 600 year old quotes for inspiration. the art of poetry is dead. KK prove me wrong!

Actually the quote is about 400 years old, and Henry V probably never said it. Shakespeare wrote the play circa 1600 and obviously made up his own dialogue.

Aye, he weren't a bad wordsmith that Bill bloke! Amazing insight into what would still rouse a response from people years from when he wrote it.
