View Full Version : Lower Leagues and SKY

I have often wondered why the Premiership gets more coverage than anything else on Sky. It makes no sense! There are 20 teams averaging about 22,000 maybe which comes to roughly 440,000.

Then we look at the Championship and below and if we say for this argument out of the whole of the 3 leagues the average attanedance is roughly 9000 then we have 3 leagues, with 24 teams in each league this makes for 648,000 people.

How do Sky justify that people are more interested in the Premier League, surely it would benefit everyone showing some more games from the lower leagues?

Because they have the best, most skillfull - most entertaining players mate - its not rocket science is it?
Ermm - Man Utd v Chelsea or Mansfield v Lincoln.....which would you rather watch?
I do agree that there should be more local derbys from the lower leagues shown tho!!

Because Sky isn't looking to appeal to the diehard fans of each particular club. The success of Sky football is that the matches it shows are big enough to attract viewers who do not particularly support any of the clubs involved.

The only people interested in watching Mansfield v Lincoln, to use KBs example, are those who come from Mansfield or Lincoln, and half of them will be at the match in any case.

Your argument being that you are comparing the attendances of 20 teams against that of 72?

You spotted the flaw in his argument, Si. Not hard was it, some quality statistical analysis, many would have been suckered in!

As Sky have decided to show the Forest replay (was a bit obvious) it looks like City have been overlooked again.

The same could be said about the Salisbury game, who would want to watch Salisbury on Sky when the FA cup has some other cracking replays, including a derby?

Sky are not bothered about the lower leagues, and only jumped in when ITV dodgytal fucked every football league club up. They promised a better deal for football league clubs, but as of yet noone has seen it

Sky show Championship games, about 3 per team, per season which isn't bad. Plus i think with the continued growth of the premiership it only stands to strengthen the quality of lower leagues making the Championship a more attractive prospect for neutrals. i'd argue that the Championship is the best division 2 out of any other in Europe and the football played is of a very high standard.
