Hey BiN, have you heard of a Norwegian group called Vek? I heard some of their music the other night and thought it rather marvelous. Its pretty left field, but draws on traditional Norwegian folk music and uses traditional instruments. As Norway.org has it: "The music of Vek includes traditional material, original compositions and improvisation. At times it is hauntingly spatial, finely honed and minimalist, whilst in other pieces the players produce a densely layered web of sound, with melodies, counter-melodies and rhythmic phrases all interweaving, creating music with its own powerful beauty."
They've been on tour here, but I missed them.

Hi Euro, to be honest I haven't heard of them. I know there are quite a few Norwegian bands who give up on Norway and try their luck in places like the UK and have some success. There are quite a few interesting bands around, like everywhere, breaking through is the difficult bit.
Vek if you are interested actually means "Weak or feeble" in English.
There is one Norwegian group which have asked me to help them with something. They're pretty good if you like that sound. They are called 3-11 Porter, they've had a couple of albums and are on over 100 compilation albums throughout the world.

For anybody who would like to attend a really cool music festival which has a couple of major artists and lots of up and coming new bands, and attracts a lot of music journalists from the UK and the US, then I can highly recommend the Øyafestival which takes place each summer here in Oslo.

Guess I'll have to check Vek out.
