Anyone ever thought about writing their own tv show / film / book?

Anyone ever seriously thought about it?

Anyone actually started?

Just wondering...... sort of.

Pick a few characters from here and write a soap opera, you'd have something to rival Eastenders!

Unless you're actually going to study how to write a book, the best advice I can give is just do it. That's the hardest part. You can see by this thread how many people would like to write a book.
Once you've written it, ask friends, family anyone you know who might be able to give you some good feedback to read it. Listen to what they have to say. They will normally be impressed so won't give you the brutal truth, but they should give you some idea.
If you feel confident enough then hire a literary agent to read it. This is going to cost some money, however they will give you a lot of professional objective feeback and advice.
Publishers only publish books they believe will sell, they are in it for the money. If you want to get your book published by a publisher, then it's going to have to fit into their formula for making money, which means you might have to re-write it a number of times.
My advice is just sit down and write the thing, don't do it for anybody else. Write it for yourself, the story you want to tell in the way you want to tell it, don't think about what others might want to hear. After you've finished the experience will so rewarding it won't matter whether you get it published or not. And if it does create enough interest to warrent publishing, then all the better.

Sorry Dutch, couldn't resist it. Seriously though i read the link & i think its an exciting idea. People in the past i suppose would write things & not know what the next step would be, wether to approach a publisher or a TV company or whatever. This gives the normal guy a platform for their work.

I had a book published in 2002 and am working on my next one. It was well recieved but sales have been disappointing, but that doesn't really matter because I got an advance. As a rule, publishers will only pay an advance to first writers of non-fiction, fiction writers just have to send in manuscripts, again and again in the hope of getting published.
While some people say just write your book and send it off, I would be wary of that as you could spend ages working on something only to be told its rubbish. A creative writing class would be a good idea for any aspiring writers as you would get feedback as you go along and you get ideas on structure etc. Writng is a solitary experience and the chance to discuss the process with others in a similar situation would be useful I reckon.
That said, one of the best books I have read in recent years, Summer in Baden Baden by Leonid Tsypskin, was written by a guy with no experience and "written for the draw" that is not for publication, and was only published after his death.

Simon's book is called, Going Down; Football in Crisis. I've read it and indeed own a copy. It's interesting and almost prophetical in predicting the boom to bust of football in recent years. It's a great book.
